12 Days Uganda Classic Safari

Leave the urban sprawl behind and head north toward the dry savannah. The first stop is the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, the only place in Uganda where you can track southern white rhinos on foot. Accompanied by expert rangers, you will walk through the bush to observe these heavy-set grazers at close range.

In the afternoon, continue the drive into Murchison Falls National Park. You will visit the top of the falls, where the entire Victoria Nile is forced through a six-meter gap in the rocks. The sheer force creates a constant mist and a roar that can be felt in your chest before you settle into your lodge for the night.

Start the morning with a drive across the Borassus palm-studded plains of the northern sector. This area is home to large herds of Rothschild giraffes, Jackson's hartebeest, and elephants. Keep a sharp eye on the thickets for lions and the elusive leopard, which often hunt in the early light.

In the afternoon, board a boat for a trip upstream toward the base of the falls. The riverbanks are crowded with massive Nile crocodiles and pods of hippos. You will see red-throated bee-eaters nesting in the cliffs and perhaps even the rare Shoebill stork in the marshy edges of the river.

This is a day of changing scenery as you travel south along the Albertine Rift. The road winds through rural villages and vast tea plantations that paint the hillsides a vibrant green. As you approach Fort Portal, the jagged peaks of the Rwenzori Mountains—the legendary Mountains of the Moon—begin to dominate the horizon.

The destination is the edge of the Kibale Forest, a high-canopy jungle known for having the highest density of primates in East Africa. The air here is cooler and carries the scent of damp earth and tropical flora.

Enter the rainforest early to track a habituated troop of chimpanzees. Following their vocalizations, you will find them feeding on wild figs or grooming in the forest clearings. Observing their complex social structures and human-like gestures is a profound experience that highlights our shared biological heritage.

After lunch, visit the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary for a guided walk. This community-run project is a haven for eight different primate species and over 200 bird species. Look for the colorful Great Blue Turaco and the Papyrus Gonolek hiding in the dense reeds.

The drive to Queen Elizabeth National Park takes you across the equator. You will explore the Bunyaruguru crater field, where dozens of extinct volcanic craters are now filled with deep blue water or lush forest. It is a dramatic landscape shaped by ancient tectonic forces.

Descending onto the rift valley floor, the vegetation shifts back to open savannah. Arrive at your lodge in time for a sundowner overlooking the vast plains of the park, with the Rwenzori range providing a sharp backdrop to the west.

A morning game drive on the Kasenyi plains offers the best chance to see lions on the hunt. The plains are a primary breeding ground for Uganda Kob, which attracts the park's apex predators. You may also encounter giant forest hogs and Cape buffaloes grazing in the morning dew.

The afternoon is spent on the Kazinga Channel, a natural waterway connecting Lake George and Lake Edward. From the boat, you will see elephants coming down to drink and bathe, while hundreds of hippos jostle for space in the shallows. The birdlife here is prolific, with kingfishers and fish eagles constantly on the wing.

Travel through the southern Ishasha sector of the park, famous for its unique population of tree-climbing lions. These cats are often found lounging in the sturdy branches of ancient fig trees to escape the heat and insects of the ground. It is a rare sight found in only a few places in Africa.

Leaving the savannah, the road climbs into the Kigezi highlands. The terrain becomes steeper and more rugged as you approach the boundary of the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, a UNESCO World Heritage site and home to half of the world's remaining mountain gorillas.

This is the most physically demanding and rewarding day of the safari. After a briefing from the park rangers, you will head into the dense, tangled vegetation of the forest. The trek can take several hours as you navigate steep ridges and thick undergrowth in search of a specific gorilla family.

Once found, you have exactly one hour to observe these gentle giants. Watching a silverback watch over his family while juveniles play nearby is a quiet, intense experience. The silence of the forest is only broken by the sound of the gorillas chewing bamboo and the occasional low grunt of communication.

After the intensity of the forest, the journey continues to the tranquil shores of Lake Bunyonyi. The drive takes you through the 'Switzerland of Africa,' characterized by steep terraced hillsides and winding mountain roads that offer expansive views of the Virunga Volcanoes in the distance.

Arrive at the lake, which is one of the deepest in Africa and remarkably free of hippos, crocodiles, and bilharzia. The atmosphere is peaceful, with the water reflecting the surrounding green peaks and the small wooden boats of local fishermen.

Spend the day at your own pace. You can take a traditional dugout canoe to visit some of the 29 islands, each with its own history, such as the infamous Punishment Island. The local guides share stories of the Bakiga people and the traditions that have shaped life on the lake for centuries.

Alternatively, find a quiet spot on the shore to read or swim in the cool, clear water. The area is a paradise for birdwatchers, with dozens of species flitting through the lakeside trees, giving the lake its name, which translates to 'place of many little birds.'

The final leg of the journey is a drive back toward the capital. You will stop at the Equator crossing in Kayabwe for photographs and a chance to see water drainage demonstrations. It is also an excellent place to pick up locally crafted souvenirs and textiles from the community markets.

Continue to Entebbe, where you will enjoy a final meal overlooking Lake Victoria. Your guide will ensure you arrive at the airport in time for your evening departure, marking the end of your comprehensive circuit through Uganda's most iconic landscapes.
