9-day Uganda Bird watching Safari

The journey north leads you through a mosaic of landscapes, transitioning from the lush central plateau to the drier woodlands of the Murchison basin. A strategic stop at the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary offers more than just megafauna; the surrounding acacia scrub is home to the White-crested Turaco and the Bruce's Green Pigeon. As you cross the Nile and enter Uganda's largest national park, the bird list expands rapidly with the appearance of the Silverbird and the Black-headed Gonolek.

The afternoon drive toward the Victoria Nile delta reveals a shift in vegetation. You will scan the Borassus palms and whistling thorns for the Abyssinian Ground Hornbill and the Secretary Bird. The park's diverse habitats—ranging from riverine forest to open grasslands—ensure a high species turnover. Your lodge for the night overlooks the river, where the evening air is filled with the calls of the Red-throated Bee-eater and the Square-tailed Nightjar.

An early start on the northern bank of the Nile targets the park's raptors and grassland specialists. You will look for the Martial Eagle, Bateleur, and the Grey Kestrel. The open plains often yield sightings of the Denham's Bustard and the Black-bellied Bustard. In the thickets, keep an ear out for the Spotted Morning Thrush and the Double-toothed Barbet. The morning light provides the perfect backdrop for capturing the vibrant colors of the Northern Carmine Bee-eater.

In the afternoon, a private boat cruise to the base of Murchison Falls offers a different perspective. The riverbanks are lined with nesting colonies of Red-throated Bee-eaters and the massive Goliath Heron. You may spot the Rock Pratincole on the exposed boulders near the falls and the African Skimmer patrolling the sandbars. The spray from the world's most powerful waterfall creates a mist-filled gorge where the rare Pel's Fishing Owl is sometimes seen roosting in the overhanging trees.

This is a day of scenic travel as you head southwest along the edge of the Albertine Rift Valley. The route offers expansive views of the blue mountains of the Congo in the distance. As you pass through the tea estates of Fort Portal, the birding remains active along the roadside. Look for the Augur Buzzard soaring on thermals and the Long-crested Eagle perched on telegraph poles. The landscape becomes increasingly lush as you approach the primate capital of the world.

Kibale Forest is a massive block of mid-altitude rainforest, home to 13 primate species and over 370 bird species. Upon arrival, you will check into your lodge located on the forest fringe. The evening is spent scouting the garden for the Great Blue Turaco and the Black-and-white-casqued Hornbill, both of which are common in this area. The forest edges are also excellent for spotting the Narrow-tailed Starling and the Yellow-spotted Barbet.

Before the sun rises, you will enter the forest in hopes of locating the Green-breasted Pitta, one of Africa's most difficult birds to see. This bird displays on the forest floor at dawn, and its distinctive 'phew' call is the primary way to track it. Following this, you join a Chimpanzee tracking excursion. While the primates are the main attraction, the forest canopy is alive with the African Grey Parrot, the Blue-throated Roller, and the White-thighed Hornbill.

The afternoon is dedicated to the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, a community-run project on the edge of the forest. This swamp is famous for its high density of Great Blue Turacos. You will walk along the boardwalks searching for the Papyrus Gonolek, the White-winged Warbler, and the Speckled Tinkerbird. The swamp also provides a chance to see the Western Nicator and the Grey-winged Robin-chat in the dense undergrowth.

Leaving the forest behind, the route takes you south across the equator. The scenery is dominated by the Rwenzori Mountains, the 'Mountains of the Moon,' which provide a dramatic backdrop. You will explore the explosion crater lakes, some of which are seasonal homes to Lesser Flamingos. The surrounding grasslands are excellent for the Grassland Pipit and the Flappet Lark, known for its distinctive mechanical wing-snapping display during flight.

As you enter Queen Elizabeth National Park, the habitat changes to open savannah dotted with Euphorbia trees. This park has a bird list of over 600 species, the highest of any protected area in Africa. Look for the Temminck's Courser and the Caspian Plover on the short-grass plains. Your evening concludes at a lodge overlooking the Kazinga Channel, where the calls of the African Fish Eagle signal the end of the day.

The morning game drive explores the Kasenyi plains, a vital breeding ground for the Uganda Kob and a prime hunting territory for lions. For the birder, this area is rich in raptors, including the Brown Snake Eagle and the Grey-backed Fiscal. You will search for the Rufous-naped Lark and the Red-capped Lark in the open areas. The bushes along the tracks often hold the Black-lored Babbler and the Sulphur-breasted Bush-shrike.

The afternoon boat safari on the Kazinga Channel is a highlight of the trip. The channel attracts a staggering volume of waterbirds. You will drift past hundreds of Great White Pelicans, Yellow-billed Storks, and African Spoonbills. The African Skimmer is a frequent sight here, along with the Gull-billed Tern. This is also an excellent opportunity to see the African Jacana and the Pied Kingfisher in high numbers, often just a few meters from the boat.

The journey continues toward the southern reaches of the park, passing through the Ishasha sector. This area is famous for tree-climbing lions, but the riverine forests along the Ishasha River are also home to the Black Bee-eater and the Cassin's Flycatcher. As you climb higher into the Kigezi Highlands, the air cools and the vegetation thickens into the ancient, mist-covered canopy of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

Bwindi is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a critical area for Albertine Rift endemics. Upon arrival in the Ruhija or Buhoma sector, you will begin birding the forest edges. Look for the Handsome Francolin, the Mountain Masked Apalis, and the Regal Sunbird. The forest here is dense, and many species are found in mixed-species feeding flocks that move quickly through the mid-strata of the trees.

Your final day begins with a briefing for Mountain Gorilla trekking. While the focus is on the primates, the trek takes you through some of the best birding territory in Africa. As you move through the understory, keep an eye out for the African Broadbill and the Grauer's Broadbill, two of the park's most sought-after rarities. The experience of standing just meters from a Silverback is complemented by the song of the White-tailed Blue Flycatcher and the Kivu Ground Thrush.

After the trek, you will begin the journey back to Entebbe. A domestic flight from the Kihihi or Kisoro airstrip provides a swift and scenic return, offering a bird's-eye view of the terraced hills and the winding Nile. Upon arrival in Entebbe, you can enjoy a final meal or a day room to freshen up before your international departure, concluding an intensive and rewarding circuit through Uganda's avian hotspots.
