About Mikumi National Park

The Gateway to the Southern Circuit

Mikumi National Park is the most accessible of Tanzania’s southern national parks. Located just a 4-5 hour drive from Dar es Salaam on a paved road, it is a popular weekend destination for city residents and a perfect introduction to the wild for those with limited time.

The park is dominated by the Mkata Plains, an open savannah landscape that bears a striking resemblance to the Serengeti. These plains are surrounded by the dramatic peaks of the Uluguru and Rubeho mountains, providing a beautiful backdrop to every game drive.

The Mini-Serengeti

Mikumi is often called the “Mini-Serengeti” because of its open vistas and high concentration of wildlife. The Mkata Plains are home to massive prides of lions, herds of zebras, wildebeest, and the world’s largest antelope—the Eland. The park is also one of the best places in Tanzania to see the majestic Greater Kudu.

Wildlife of the Waterholes

The park’s center is dominated by several permanent waterholes, which are magnets for wildlife, especially during the dry season. You can expect to see large numbers of elephants, buffaloes, and giraffes gathered to drink. The Hippo Pools are a highlight, offering close-up views of wallowing hippos and numerous waterbirds.

A Birding Crossroads

With over 400 recorded species, Mikumi is a fantastic birding destination. The mix of savannah and riverine habitats attracts a high diversity of species, including the vibrant Lilac-breasted Roller, various hornbills, and a high concentration of raptors. During the wet season, the park is a vital stopover for migratory birds from Europe and Asia.

The Mkata Plains: A Mirror of the Serengeti

The centerpiece of Mikumi National Park is the Mkata Floodplain, an open savannah landscape that bears a striking resemblance to the Serengeti. These vast, golden grasslands are the park’s primary stage for wildlife viewing. During the dry season, the plains are teeming with life, from massive herds of wildebeest and zebra to the graceful impalas that gave the park its name (Mikumi is the Swahili word for the spindle-shaped Borassus palm). The open vistas make it incredibly easy to spot the big cats, particularly the park’s famous lion prides which often spend the day perched on the numerous rocky outcrops or under the shade of acacia trees. It is a classic ‘Big Game’ experience that provides the spirit of the Serengeti just a few hours from the Tanzanian coast.

The Gateway to the South

Mikumi is the vital gateway to Tanzania’s southern safari circuit. Its location on the main paved road from Dar es Salaam makes it the most accessible national park in the country. For many travelers, it is their first taste of the African wild. Despite its popularity, Mikumi remains a serious conservation area, acting as a vital corridor for wildlife moving between the Selous (Nyerere NP) and the Udzungwa Mountains. This connectivity ensures a high level of biodiversity, and you can often see species that are rare elsewhere, such as the Greater Kudu and the beautiful Lichtenstein’s Hartebeest. For those with limited time or on a budget, Mikumi offers a high-fidelity safari experience that is both professional and profound.

The Hippo Pools and Waterholes

The park’s permanent waterholes and the Hippo Pools are the focal points for game viewing, especially during the northern summer months. The Hippo Pools, located just a few kilometers from the main entrance, are a guaranteed highlight. Here, you can watch massive pods of hippos wallowing and grunting in the mud, while various waterbirds like the Great White Pelican and the Yellow-billed Stork forage nearby. Large herds of elephants and buffaloes are frequent visitors to these pools, often providing spectacular ‘National Geographic’ moments as they interact at the water’s edge. The abundance of water in an otherwise dry landscape makes Mikumi a reliable year-round destination for those wanting to see large numbers of animals in a concentrated area.

A Birder’s Roadside Paradise

With over 400 recorded species, Mikumi is a world-class birding destination that is surprisingly easy to explore. The park’s mix of open savannah, acacia woodland, and riverine forest attracts a high diversity of species. You can expect to see the vibrant Lilac-breasted Roller (the national bird of Botswana), various species of hornbills, and a high concentration of raptors like the Bateleur and Martial Eagle. During the wet season (December to April), the park is a vital stopover for migratory birds from Europe and Asia, which arrive in massive numbers, turning the acacia trees into multi-colored ‘ornaments’ of the savannah. For birders, a drive along the Mkata plains is a constant journey of discovery, with a new and exciting sighting around every bend in the road.
