Smallest Park, Biggest Heart
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is Uganda’s smallest national park, but what it lacks in size, it more than makes up for in dramatic beauty and unique wildlife. Tucked away in the far southwestern corner of Uganda, it protects the Ugandan slopes of the Virunga Mountains, a chain of spectacular dormant volcanoes that straddle the borders of Uganda, Rwanda, and the DRC.
The park is most famous for its “Gold and Silver” encounter—the chance to see both the endangered Golden Monkey and the majestic Mountain Gorilla in a single, compact wilderness. The Nyakagezi gorilla group, the park’s only habituated family, is known for its high number of silverbacks and its relatively easy tracking terrain compared to Bwindi.

Mgahinga is dominated by three extinct volcanoes: Mount Muhavura (4,127m), Mount Gahinga (3,474m), and Mount Sabinyo (3,669m). Each offers a distinct hiking experience. Sabinyo, which means “Old Man’s Teeth,” is particularly famous for its jagged crown, where you can stand in three countries (Uganda, Rwanda, and DRC) at the same time at the summit.
Golden Monkey Tracking
Mgahinga is the only place in Uganda where you can track the beautiful Golden Monkey. These fast-moving, bamboo-loving primates are a joy to watch as they leap through the canopy. Mount Muhavura, the ‘Guide,’ is the highest of the three and offers a crystal-clear crater lake at its summit, while Mount Gahinga provides a gentler climb through beautiful bamboo forests and a swamp-filled crater.
The Golden Monkey Habituation Experience
While standard tracking gives you an hour with these vibrant primates, the ‘Habituation Experience’ in Mgahinga allows for a deeper four-hour immersion. You accompany researchers as they follow the monkeys, observing their complex social structures and unique feeding habits. Golden Monkeys are incredibly fast and playful, often leaping several meters between bamboo stalks. Their striking orange-gold coats against the misty green of the forest make them a photographer’s dream. The Sacred Garama Cave
Deep within the forest of Mgahinga lies the Garama Cave, a place of immense historical and spiritual significance for the Batwa people. During the Batwa Trail experience, you descend into the darkness of the cave as your guides recount stories of their ancestors.
